As part of the ICS Career Week 2026 (30 March \u2013 3 April)<\/strong>, organised by the Hellenic Management Centre (HMC) \/ ICS Greek Branch, the week commenced with a highly engaging and insightful guest lecture on Monday, 30 March<\/strong>, delivered by Panos Sotiropoulos, PhD<\/strong>, C-Suite HR Executive, Founder of the Work Intelligence Institute, and author of Right Job, Right Life<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Titled \u201cBuilding a Career That Fits: Skills, Choices & Opportunities in Shipping\u201d<\/strong>, the session set the tone for the week by focusing on one of the most critical yet often overlooked aspects of professional development: how to effectively navigate the world of work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Drawing on over 22 years of international experience and thousands of hiring decisions, Panos Sotiropoulos introduced participants to the concept of Work Intelligence<\/em>; the ability to understand how the employment market truly operates, align personal strengths with market opportunities, and make strategic career decisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The session challenged common assumptions about employability, highlighting that career success is not determined solely by academic performance or technical knowledge, but by a combination of self-awareness, professional maturity, adaptability, and the ability to create value for employers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A key part of the discussion focused on how employers actually think and make hiring decisions, emphasising the importance of cultural fit, problem-solving ability, and genuine interest in the organisation, elements often underestimated by candidates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Participants were also introduced to the concept of the \u201chidden job market\u201d<\/strong>, where a significant proportion of opportunities are accessed through networks, referrals, and industry engagement rather than formal job postings. In this context, the value of the ICS global network was highlighted as a powerful career development tool.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Through practical exercises and real-world examples, the session offered actionable guidance on building an authentic professional profile, approaching companies strategically, preparing for interviews, avoiding common career mistakes, and shaping long-term career direction in the shipping industry. It also highlighted the importance of continuous self-development and intentional career planning in a highly global and competitive sector with vast opportunities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The opening session of ICS Career Week 2026 successfully combined strategic insight with practical tools<\/strong>, equipping participants with the mindset and skills required to take the next step in their careers with confidence and clarity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
